Micro-RNA Analysis

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are highly conserved, single-stranded RNA molecules of about 19-23 nucleotides in length. They play a very important role in gene regulation by binding to the 3'-untranslated regions of specific mRNAs.

The miRBase database of the Sanger Institute gives the current status of known miRNAs.

Since miRNAs are thought to represent only 0.01% of the total mass of RNA in a sample (10 µg total RNA contains ~1 ng miRNA), it's detection and quantification can be challenging.

Micro-RNA expression can be measured with micro-arrays as well as with next generation sequencing. The technology of choice depends on the needs

The FGCZ currently provides miRNA expression analys using Agilent or Affymetrix microarrays ,as well as by next generation sequencing using our SOLiD system.
