The FGCZ produces custom microarrays for special applications that are not covered satisfactorily by commercially available products. Typical applications for custom arrays are, for example, expression microarrays for non-model organisms, or focused arrays for the analysis of specific gene families or disease related genes.
Microarrays are generated either by printing probes on a glass slide or by in-situ synthesis.
The printing approach uses standard glass slides as base and can print oligonucleotides, ESTs, cellular materials, carbohydrates, antibodies, peptides and protein. It is suitable for arrays of low or medium density and for batch sizes from ~100 to ~1000
The in-situ synthesis of oligo probes is done with the Febit Geniom One system on proprietary chips. It is suitable for arrays with up ~7000 oligos with oligo lengths up to ~30nt and small batch sizes. As a special use case, the system can be employed to evaluate the performance of oligonucleotide probes, since any oligonucleotide can be synthesized cost-efficiently even for single arrays.
