Users of the FGCZ sign responsible for the handling of the biological samples they wish to analyze, e.g. cultured cell lines, tissue preparations or entire organs from model organisms (or even clinical specimens). In order to reduce the complexity of the sample, methods to purify or enrich specific sub-cellular compartments are commonly used, e.g. plasma membrane fraction, mitochondria, nuclei, synaptic vesicles, etc. Since this step very profoundly influences the success of the entire experiment, we encourage users to engage FGCZ staff (which has a long-standing experience in this area) in an up-front discussion. In addition, we expect users that submit research proposals as part of our “user lab concept”, to outline the envisioned experimental approaches in quite some detail.

Subsequently, the sub-cellular compartment of interest is further processed to extract proteins or peptides. These typically very complex mixtures are then fractionated further using a variety of methods.
